Origins of 1001 Nights

One Thousand and One Nights is a diverse collection of folk tales and anecdotes. This book, or rather these volumes, consist of around two-hundred tales of famous, imaginary, literary characters. But One Thousand and One Nights isn’t just a book of stories: it is a mythical and enchanting world and a great literary accomplishment. The book transformed into the inspiration of many artists. This inspiration appeared in their creativity in fiction, theatre, poetry, music, etc. One Thousand and One Nights was imitated and used in writing stories, especially children’s stories

كتاب ألف ليلة وليلة يضمّ مجموعة متنوّعة من القصص الشّعبيّة والنّوادر. وهذا الكتاب أو بالأحرى هذه المجلّدات تحتوي على حوالى مائتي حكاية فيها شخصيّات أدبيّة خياليّة مشهورة. ولكنّ كتاب ألف ليلة وليلة ليس مجرّد كتاب حكايات: إنّه عالم أسطوريّ ساحر و إنجاز أدبيّ ضخم. تحوّل هذا الكتاب إلى وحي لفنّانين كثيرين. فظهر هذا الوحي في إبداعهم الرّوائيّ والمسرحيّ والشّعريّ والموسيقيّ وغير ذلك. وقد قُلّد كتاب ألف ليلة وليلة بصورة كبيرة وأستعمل في تأليف القصص وبالأخصّ في قصص الأطفال

The story of this book begins with King Shahryar’s discovery of his wife’s betrayal, then the ordering of her execution. But the king isn’t satisfied with the execution of his wife only. He also wants to take revenge on every woman in his kingdom. For this reason, he begins to marry a woman every night, then execute her in the morning of the following day! After a period of time, his minister (whose duty is to find the women for the king) is no longer able to find any women in the kingdom because they learned of what King Shahryar was doing and fled from him in fear

تبدأ قصّة هذا الكتاب باكتشاف الملك شهريار خيانة زوجته ثمّ الأمر بإعدامها. ولكنّ الملك لا يكتفي بإعدام زوجته فقط. بل أراد أيضًا أن ينتقم من كلّ الفتيات في مملكته. ولهذا السّبب بدأ بالزّواج من فتاة كلّ ليلة ثمّ إعدامها في صباح اليوم التّالي! وبعد فترة من الوقت لم يعد وزيره (الّذي من واجبه إيجاد الفتيات للملك) يستطيع إيجاد أيّة فتاة في المملكة لأنّهم علموا بما يفعله الملك شهريار وهربوا خوفاً منه

But when Scheherazade, the minister’s daughter, learns about this, she presents herself to King Shahryar hoping to use her intelligence to save herself and the women of her kingdom from the king. So on the night of her wedding, Scheherazade asks King Shahryar to allow her sister Dinazade to visit the palace to bid her farewell. The king agrees and Dinazade comes to the royal palace where she asks Scheherazade to tell her a story. So Scheherazade starts to recite a tale to her sister within earshot of the king. The night past before Scheherazade finishes recounting the tale, and the king falls asleep. Because the king is eager to hear the conclusion of the story, he postpones Scheherazade’s execution

لكنّ عندما تعلم شهرزاد ابنة الوزير بهذا تقدّم نفسها للملك شهريار آملة في استعمال ذكائها لإنقاذ نفسها وفتيات مملكتها من الملك. ففي ليلة عرسها، تطلب شهرزاد من الملك شهريار بأن يسمح لأختها دنيازاد بزيارة القصر لتوديعها. يوافق الملك وتأتي دنيازاد إلى القصر الملكيّ حيث تطلب من شهرزاد أن تقصّ عليها قصّة . فتبدأ شهرزاد بسرد الحكاية لأختها على مسامع الملك . وينقضي اللّيل قبل أن تنتهي شهرزاد من سرد الحكاية، وينام الملك. ولأنّ الملك يتوق إلى سماع خِتام الحكاية يؤجّل إعدام شهرزاد

The next night, Scheherazade finishes reciting the tale and, at the request of the King Shahryar, starts reciting a new tale. Again, the night passes before she finishes reciting the tale. And again, the king postpones her execution. In this way, Scheherazade started to recite interconnected stories, so that she completes every story the following night until they reached one thousand and one nights, so we came to have the book One Thousand and One Nights

في اللّيلة التّالية تنتهي شهرزاد من سرد الحكاية وبأمر من الملك شهريار تبدأ بسرد حكاية جديدة. ومرّة أخرى ينقضي اللّيل قبل أن تنتهي من سرد الحكاية. ومرّة أخرى يؤجّل الملك إعدامها. وهكذا بدأت شهرزاد في سرد قصص مترابطة بحيث تكمل كلّ قصّة في اللّيلة الّتي تليها حتّى وصلت بهم اللّيالي ألف ليلة وليلة واحدة، وأصبح لدينا كتاب “ألف ليلة وليلة”
